Graded hiking trails through the rocky landscape of Shikoku

Tourism Shikoku

Kamegamori is a 1,897-meter-high mountain in Kochi Prefecture, Shikoku. The road to the summit can be reached by car or motorcycle, but it is also popular for hiking. Along with Mt. Ishizuchi and Mt. Sasagamine, it is one of three peaks in the area, all renowned for their natural beauty.

Mt. Ishizuchi is the tallest peak in western Japan at 1,982 meters. Mt. Kamegamori is less challenging, offering a short and relatively easy climb that still provides an amazing view of the surrounding mountain range. Despite its altitude, it can be climbed in just one hour without special equipment.

The easiest route recommended for beginners starts from the top of Kamegamori Road (also known as the UFO line). Access it by taking the Matsuyama Expressway Iyo Saijo interchange to National Highway 11, then National Highway 194 to Kamegamori Road, exiting near the Kanpuzan Tunnel.

An intermediate trail option is from the edge of Saijo City on the Higashinokawa Forest Road. Access it by taking National Highway 11 to National Highway 194, then Prefectural Highway 12 to Nishinokawa towards the Ishizuchi Tozan Ropeway.

Another intermediate route starts at the Furuse trailhead on the Nishinogawa forest road. This route is difficult as it involves climbing up a kusariba, a chain attached to the mountain.

Whether you walk gently up the mountain on the beginner’s course or challenge yourself on the others, you will find Kamegamori to be a true place of scenic beauty. Heal yourself in nature and the great outdoors.
