Brilliant Autumn Colors in Aizu

Get a taste of rural life in ancient Japan in a mountainous region of Fukushima

Fukushima Prefecture Tourism and Local Products Association

Experience autumn in Japan like the samurai did long ago in Aizu, a mountainous region of Fukushima. Unlike many parts of Japan that have undergone rapid urbanization, much of the history and nature of Aizu has been beautifully preserved.

Here you can still get a taste of rural life in ancient Japan, with the backdrop of dense forests that are especially beautiful in autumn with their fall foliage. Admire the brilliant Tsurugajo Castle, one of the final strongholds for the samurai during the Boshin War (1868-1869). Then, travel into the mountains and back in time to the historic post-town of Ouchi-juku to taste some traditional treats freshly smoked over the wood-burning hearths of preserved thatched roof Japanese country homes. Along the way, you can go hiking and admire the beautiful mountain views, streams, and distinctive lakes that have been formed from volcanic activity in the area, and several more unique historical sites. There is so much to see and do in Aizu, so don’t forget your camera, a cozy sweater, and your spirit of adventure!

How to get there

Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Koriyama Station, then take the JR Ban-etsu West Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. From there, take an Aizu Railway train to Yunokami Onsen Station, which also takes about 15 minutes by taxi or bus.
