Stories of Revival: A 4-Day Exploration of Horticulture in Setouchi

The Setouchi region demonstrates the power of collaboration between communities, governments, and innovators, reflecting the GREEN×EXPO 2027 subtheme of Co-operation. This four-day journey explores how the islands have revitalized agriculture, embraced sustainability, and fostered cultural renewal, from olive cultivation and terraced rice paddies to citrus innovation and community-led wineries.
 

Day 1: Olive cultivation and terraced landscapes in Kagawa

 

Take a train to Tokyo and fly from Haneda Airport to Takamatsu Airport, then drive about two hours to Shodoshima Olive Park on Shodoshima Island, Kagawa Prefecture. Explore Japan’s first successful olive-growing region and visit the Olive Memorial Museum to learn about a century of cultivation. 

 

 

In the afternoon, travel by car and ferry about 90 minutes to Teshima. Its terraced rice fields, art installations, and restored farmland show how the island has been transformed from a former dumping ground into a thriving agricultural and cultural community. Stay overnight on the island.
 

Day 2: Sustainable horticulture and art in Okayama

 

Take a short ferry ride to Inujima, a tiny island in Okayama Prefecture that was revitalized through sustainable agriculture and contemporary art. Visit Inujima Life Garden to see converted vegetable plots, herb beds, and flower fields, and learn how low-impact eco-technologies support daily life. 

 

Nearby, the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum highlights how post-industrial spaces can be repurposed creatively. Return to Teshima for the night.
 

Day 3: Citrus innovation and sustainable farming in Hiroshima

 

Take a ferry to Uno Port in Okayama and drive approximately two hours to Akitsu Port in Hiroshima, then take another ferry for about 30 minutes to Osakikamijima Island. This region is on the cutting edge of citrus cultivation, using sensors, robotics, and smart irrigation techniques. Shiki Farm focuses on sustainability and a philosophy of zero waste.  

 

 

Guests can join hands-on workshops to learn how discarded peels and branches are transformed into colorful coasters and scarves, experiencing the island’s innovative approach to sustainable agriculture firsthand. Overnight in the area and enjoy lodgings with sea views.

 

Day 4: Community wine and coastal charm in Ehime

 

Drive about an hour to Omishima Island in Ehime Prefecture, part of the Shimanami Kaido cycling route. Explore the Minnano Winery, where abandoned citrus groves have been converted into vineyards, producing over 20 varieties of organic wine. Visitors can see how residents of all ages participate in planting, harvesting, bottling, and selling the wine in a cooperative effort. Wander small fishing villages and enjoy coastal scenery, reflecting the deep connection between the islands’ communities, their land, and the sea.
