A complex themed on food, agriculture, and relaxation, to support tsunami-stricken communities

Sendai City

A multi-purpose complex that features shops, restaurants, and a spa, AQUAIGNIS Sendai was opened with the purpose of supporting the local community of the Fujitsuka District, in the eastern coast of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Once a prosperous rural area, Fujitsuka was severely damaged by the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011, and residents have been vacated due to the collective relocation projects. AQUAIGNIS Sendai aims to serve as a symbol of reconstruction, as well as a hub to attract visitors to Fujitsuka.

AQUAIGNIS Sendai integrates the concepts of “Healing and Relaxing” in the hot springs, “Eating” seasonal blessings of nature, and “Nurturing” the sustainable future in new ways, all under the common theme of “LOCAL.” In order to reduce the environmental impact, the facility is adopting a comprehensive underground system to recover waste heat from sewage water and exhaust steam and reuse it to heat the building and the greenhouse.

At the spa FUJITSUKA-no-YU, visitors can not only relax in the indoor baths, but also feel the ocean breeze while soaking in the outdoor bath surrounded by nature. The Italian and Japanese restaurants, produced by top chefs, serve dishes made using local ingredients, while a bakery and two patisseries offer unique sweets by renowned chocolatier and chef Hironobu Tsujiguchi. AQUAIGNIS Sendai also has a store that sells locally grown vegetables and local sake, as well as original Sendai souvenirs.
