Experience one of Japan’s longest snow corridors amid a Hachimantai winter wonderland

The Hachimantai Snow Corridor is a special winter experience: a stretch of road flanked by sheer walls of snow. At 27 kilometers, it’s the longest of its kind in Japan, and the walls measure up to 8 meters high in some spots. The corridor road passes close to Mt. Hachimantai’s summit, where you can park and take a stroll—and perhaps some photos with the snow walls as your backdrop.
The walls remain well into spring, allowing you to even enjoy them at the same time as the blooming sakura blossoms. It’s a unique visual that you can only see between April and May.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka Station. From Morioka Station, take a Northern Iwate Transportation bus from bay #3 bound for “Hachimantai-chojo” and ride to the terminus (about 2 hours). (Bus service is available for around 20 days starting in late April.)
By car, the snow corridor is about 25 minutes from the Matsuo-Hachimantai Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.
