Gorgeous poppy fields stretching as far as the eye can see

Saitama Prefecture

There is a spot in Saitama Prefecture where the blue sky and beautiful flowers create a scene that seems to come straight out of painting. In early summer, near Chichibu, a 4-hectar-large plateau located at an altitude of 500m is dyed in red with 12 million poppies. On fine days, the contrast between the red of the poppies and the clear blue sky is spectacular and the high altitude allows you to see mountains from other prefectures all around you.

This beautiful carpet of red poppies is also known as Tenku no Poppy, which literally translates as “poppies in the sky.” Enjoy nature with all five senses as you walk through the poppy fields stretching out to the horizon as far as the eye can see. As the pleasant wind blows, you will feel relaxed and refreshed.

During the blooming period, from mid-May to early June, a festival featuring gourmet food and local specialties is held. There are plenty of other attractions in the area, such as the Chichibu Highland Ranch where you can interact with farm animals and enjoy rich-flavored soft-serve ice cream. Why not have a great time with superb views and excellent food?

How to get there

From Kumagaya Station, take the Chichibu Line to Minano Station (about 1 hour), then take a taxi to reach Tenku no Poppy fields (20 minutes). During the festival period, a shuttle bus also runs from Minano Station (30 minutes).
