Sitting amidst the idyllic countryside of Komatsu City in Ishikawa Prefecture is Japan’s very first car museum. Established in 1978, the Motorcar Museum of Japan has been evolving with the times and patronized by car lovers from all over the world. With more than 500 vehicles on permanent display and a total area of 12,000 square meters in an elegant red-brick building, it also remains Japan’s largest museum dedicated to automobiles.

The museum spans three floors and presents cars categorized into different thematic sections. Along with exhibiting Japanese-made cars from the likes of Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda, the collection here is vibrantly international, with world-famous brands anyone would know, such as Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, just to name a few.

From an original 1899 four-wheel vehicle to cars specially made for a historical occasion, here you will encounter masterpieces you would never see elsewhere. Admire cars that once escorted royalty and celebrities or even appeared in films and anime, such as the Doraemon-shaped solar car “Solaemon.” The museum also exhibits motorcycles, toy cars, and car-related memorabilia.

With the cars on display constantly refreshed, it is always an exciting surprise what rare gem you may chance upon on your visit. Whether you are a car lover, a history buff, or simply want to get that photo with a famous car, there is something for everyone within the brick walls of this sprawling museum!
