HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Takigyo Meditation at Bentendo Waterfall
A spiritual practice to cleanse the mind, body, and soul
Yamanashi Tourism Organization
There is an old Japanese training technique called takigyo, which refers to being hit by a waterfall that emerges from the wide open air. It is a method to face oneself and build great mental strength by submerging oneself in the icy, tumultuous water of a waterfall. In recent years, it has gained popularity as a form of a very austere type of training called aragyo.
At Bentendo, you can experience a 23-meter-tall waterfall in the bitter cold. Different sects and temples have different etiquette; at Benten-do, the head priest gives direct instruction.
Why not try this unique experience out yourself? There is no doubt the takigyo experience will change something within you.
