A popular hiking destination full of attractions and power spots

Kanagawa Prefecture

Part of the Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, which is designated as a protected landscape, Mt. Oyama (1252m above sea level) is one of the best-known mountains in Kanagawa Prefecture. A place rich in nature and history, Mt. Oyama is widely popular among beginner hikers and tourists alike because of its accessibility to the mountainside via the Oyama Cable Car, its proximity to Tokyo, and its many attractions.

Mt. Oyama, which has a strong presence even from the flat ground, has been the object of worship since ancient times. It is said that during 18th and 19th centuries as many as 200,000 worshipers visited the mountain annually on the Oyama-mairi (Oyama Pilgrimage) when the population of Edo (modern Tokyo) was 1 million. Oyama-mairi is registered as a Japan Heritage site, so why not experience it for yourself?

Thanks to its convenient access from the Tokyo area, Mt. Oyama makes for a fun and easy day trip. From Oyama Afuri Shrine, which is located on the mountain, on fine days, you can see Mt. Fuji, Enoshima Island, and even the buildings of central Tokyo in the distance, a superb view that has been awarded two stars by the Michelin Green Guide Japan. The best time to visit Mt. Oyama is May through November and it is also a popular sightseeing spot to enjoy the autumn foliage and night views.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take a JR train to Shinjuku Station (15 minutes) and transfer to the Odakyu Line. Take an express train to Isehara Station (about 1 hour), a bus to the Oyama Cable Car bus stop (30 minutes), then walk 15 minutes to reach Oyama Cable Station.
