Paddle out on the open Pacific Ocean for Chiba’s idyllic seaside scenery

Chiba Prefecture

Choshi City of Chiba Prefecture juts out into the Pacific Ocean at the easternmost point of the Kanto region, offering visitors some of the most idyllic seaside scenery in the Tokyo area. It’s here at Choshi Marina Beach where the Choshi Kayaks tour operates, providing a one-of-a-kind way to access these stunning sights.
The tour starts right on the beach with warmup exercises, followed by a short demonstration and lesson about the basics of paddling. Even if you can't speak Japanese, doing some light research about kayaking maneuvers before you come should be sufficient to ensure you have a smooth lesson.

Once you’re out on the water, the tour route takes you along the beautiful Byobugaura coast. This coastline gets its namesake from Japanese byobu, traditional folding partitions, which these vertical, jagged cliffs are said to resemble. The cliff faces here rise nearly straight out of the ocean, reaching up to sixty meters in height.
It might seem like an intimidating task paddling out to the open sea and approaching these steep bluffs, but according to the instructors, most of the tour takers are beginners. Anybody can thus take pleasure in explore Japan's stunning coastline here, regardless of their level of experience with ocean sports.
