Usually, cherry blossom season comes to Kanazawa a week later than Tokyo and Osaka, around the beginning of April every year.

As one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens, Kenrokuen is one of the obvious hotspots for spring cherry blossoms. You'll find a lovely view of sakura reflected on the water at Hisago-ike Pond, where you can enjoy the view with the Kaiseki Pagoda. Another incredible view is Hanami-bashi, which is both a great spot in itself and a wonderful viewing spot for cherry blossoms in Kenrokuen.

One of the lesser-known secrets about Kenrokuen is that the admission fee is waived for a period during peak cherry blossom viewing season to enable anyone to take a sightseeing stroll through the garden.

A stroll around Kenrokuen Garden is not complete without enjoying the scenery of the adjacent Kanazawa Castle Park. For many visitors, the scenery of a Japanese castle framed by branches of fluffy pink cherry blossoms is an iconic view of Japan that must be experienced.

Other popular spots are Higashi Chaya District and Kazue-machi Chaya District, where you can enjoy cherry blossoms by the Asano River. If you are lucky, you might be able to see a flurry of cherry blossom petals, just like in a movie.

How to get there

Travel  from Tokyo Station to Kanazawa Station via the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen (about 2 hours 30 minutes). The garden is about 15 minutes via the Kanazawa Loop Bus from Kanazawa Station, then 3 minutes on foot from the Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa Castle bus stop. Alternatively, take a taxi (about 10 minutes).
