Exploring the Sacred Dewa Sanzan: A Journey Through History and Nature

Dewa Sanzan” refers to the “Three Mountains of Dewa Province”. This area in Yamagata Prefecture has a long history as the center of “Shugendo”, a folk religion that revolves around the worship of nature—mountains, forests, and rivers. Even today, you may encounter its practitioners. One of the mountains, Haguro-san, is home to a magnificent five-story pagoda, designated as a National Treasure.

Walk along the forest trail to view the pagoda’s simple exterior, and you’ll feel yourself surrounded by history. Access Option 1 From Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station, take the Yamagata Shinkansen for about 2 hours and 30 minutes. From Yamagata Station, it’s about a 1 hour and 40-minute drive. Option 2 From Tokyo Station to Niigata Station, take the Jōetsu Shinkansen for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

From Niigata Station to Tsuruoka Station, take the Limited Express Inaho for about 1 hour and 50 minutes. From Tsuruoka Station, it’s about a 45-minute bus ride.
