A new craft beer brewery was officially opened in the Akiu Onsen area last month, with even Sendai’s Mayor attending the opening ceremony! This is the first appearance in Japan for ‘Great Dane Brewing’ a brewery and restaurant founded in Wisconsin. As well as a will to contribute to the recovery from the 2011 disaster, the rich natural environment and pristine water of Akiu were also deciding factors in opening the brewery here.
Boasting a history of over 30 years in the USA, Great Dane Brewing is set to become a new landmark in Akiu Onsen. The restaurant offers up to 16 varieties of craft beer, with the exception “GREAT LAGER" and "EVERYDAY IPA" which will also be sold as cans, and can only be tasted on-site.
You can also enjoy tasty meals featuring local Miyagi ingredients, such as "fried cheese curds," a Wisconsin specialty made with Zao cheese, Hoya (sea pineapple) chowder, and "kinka-saba sandwiches" using mackerel caught in Ishinomaki off the Sanriku coast, one of the world's three largest fishing grounds!
Original merchandise such as T-shirts and cups are also available!
