Omuta Daijyayama Festival is largest event in Omuta City, Fukuoka. On the day of the festival, Omuta's sky burns bright red, and floats resembling giant snakes, each more than 10 meters long, parade through the city's main streets, their eyes wide open and their gaping mouths spitting seven-colored sparks.
The "Kamase" ceremony, in which a giant snake bites a child and prays for good health, is an annual ritual that all locals have experienced at least once. The festival is further enlivened by a variety of attractions and dancing throughout the festival site. The parade of floats with giant snakes, each with its own unique character, blowing smoke from the flames, is a powerful sight!
The main parades will be held the weekend of July 22-23, with several events leading up to it in the week prior.
