Swan-watching Season's Afloat at Ikarashi River in Niigata

Winter in Niigata prefecture is characterized by its heavy snowfall. Historically, this season has been a difficult time for farmers, leading Niigata to supplement its industry with metal processing in areas such as Tsubamesanjo. Although this cold, snowy winter has posed its share of challenges for the people of Niigata throughout history, the winter climate is apparently quite comfortable for swans!

Every year middle of November, a number of migrating swans begin to arrive in Niigata. Places in Niigata that swans can be spotted include Ikarashi River in Shitada region. It’s quite rare that swans land in rivers such as this, normally preferring calm portions of lakes or ponds.

At Ikarashi River, visitors can even observe swans from up close – that said, the swan park also has an observation room built just beside the river, for those who would prefer to stay out of the cold.
