【Partners Information】Spring is just around the corner, and with it come the possibilities of a multitude of outdoor activities. One which is open to all ages is trekking. The trails on Sado Island open in spring, after the snow has melted, and remain accessible until late November. Here are two clips introducing trekking courses that are sure to pique your interest.
Traversing a 1000-metre-high mountain range, the route from the Donden Plateau to Mount Kinpoku offers views of the ocean on either side and, in spring and summer, a rich variety of blooming alpine plants. This trekking route captures it all with its grassy meadows, forests, and rough terrain.
The Ishina Cedar Forest can be found on the ridgeline area of the Osado mountain range at an altitude of around 900m. The cedars have endured severe winter weather conditions with heavy snowfalls and strong winds for centuries. The environment has slowed the trees' growth rates and forced them to grow into unique shapes. Some of the trees are estimated to be over 300 years old. During the Edo Period, when gold mining flourished on Sado, many trees were cut down for fuel. However, since cedar trees are unsuitable for burning and seen as commercially useless, the trees are lucky to have been left untouched to the present day.
