In the northern prefecture of Akita lies Unshoji, a temple enveloped in a miraculous blue hydrangea garden.
Over the past 20 years, Mr. Soun Furunaka, the deputy chief priest, has nurtured more than 2,000 hydrangea plants at Unshoji Temple, which have grown from one to more than 2,000 and stain the temple grounds a brilliant blue. The flowers, carefully nurtured to be the “bluest in Japan,” spread out like a blue carpet, attracting visitors.
The flowers are at their best from early June to mid-July, and are illuminated at night. The illumination at night creates a fantastic atmosphere that differs from that of the daytime.
