Forge Your Own Japanese Knife in Gifu

Learn traditional smithing techniques from a true Japanese swordsmith

At Asano Kajiya in Gifu Prefecture, take part in a workshop and make a forged Japanese knife under the guidance of a traditional swordsmith. Asano Taro, who teaches the workshop, is a master of his craft, with a certificate from the Japanese government attesting to his skills. He'll be happy to share knowledge with you in English about his works, which have been appreciated both domestically and abroad, as well as the cultural exchange activities he engages in with blacksmiths around the world as part of his effort to share Japanese swordsmith techniques.

Visitors can look forward to a hands-on lesson in which Asano-san will lead you in the time-honored techniques of hammering, trimming, and sharpening. The forging process is a time-consuming one, requiring about seven hours in total, but you'll be rewarded with a unique treasure of your very own to take home the same day. Even if it is your first time working with metal, Taro teaches in a patient and easy-to-understand manner perfect for beginners.

There's time to relax as well, as lunch is included in the experience, offering a break during which you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and get to know all about your teacher and his craft.

Access: From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen to Gifu-Hashima Station (about 50 minutes); . Asano Kajiya is a 16-minute walk from the station.
