Rest and Relaxation in the Marine Paradise of Hatsushima
Discover natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and fine dining on Shizuoka's only inhabited island
Hatsushima is a resort island in Shizuoka Prefecture blessed with a mild climate year-round thanks to sea currents from the south, and is in fact the only inhabited island in the prefecture.
Arrive on the island via one of two high-speed boats and you'll find a paradise where you can swing on a hammock and take in beautiful ocean vistas. The whole family will enjoy the Sarutobi forest adventure course, where you can navigate the treetops in harnesses and on ziplines. Enjoy the beautiful flowers that bloom year-round and see as far as Mt. Fuji when the skies are clear.
Marine sports enthusiasts can enjoy diving, snorkeling, and fishing, or relax in the island pool, open during the summer months and offering great views of the sea. Fine dining fans will want to try the treasure trove of seafood delights available on the island, including freshly caught sashimi served by local fishermen. If it seems like too much to see in a single day, the island also has a villa-style area for an overnight glamping ("glamorous camping") experience in caravans or cottages. Soothe your body at relaxing baths, or visit cultural sites like shrines and museums and take in the island's rich history.
Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen to Atami Station (about 40 minutes), then walk (about 25 minutes) or take a taxi (about 10 minutes) to Atami Port, take the ferry to the island (about 30 minutes), and walk to PICA Hatsushima (about 15 minutes).
