Kick Back on Sun-Soaked Aoshima Beach
Enjoy fun and nature at this coastal Miyazaki resort
If sun-bathed splashing is your thing, look no further than Aoshima Beach, just south of Miyazaki City. Both the city of Miyazaki and the prefecture of the same name, are in eastern Kyushu and the far southwest of Japan, and known for balmy weather.
These shores in particular offer picture-postcard views of blue Pacific waters, with more than enough to keep both surfers and sightseers happy. Stroll along the beach to Aoshima Island and admire its striking, striated basalt rock formation nicknamed the “Devil’s Washboard”. Check out some other visual feasts and visit the Shinto shrine and Japanese torii gate on the island. For marine sports, Aoshima Beach has surfing, sailing, and swimming. Soak up the relaxed community vibe, with shops and cafés open in the summer months.
Access: By air, fly from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Miyazaki Airport (about one hour 40 minutes), take the bus from the airport to the Aoshima stop (about 25 minutes), then walk five minutes. Alternatively, take a taxi from the airport directly to Aoshima Beach (about 15 minutes).
