A Private Stay in a Pastoral, Historic Farmhouse

Experience a slice of rural life in the untouched mountains of Nagano

A century-old farmhouse perched in the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains could be yours to call home for a night, courtesy of Yamaura Stay. Choose from one of four spacious residences and enjoy the elegance of traditional aesthetics alongside modern comforts. Soak up the timeless beauty of the original architecture, accented with sturdy wooden beams, decorative alcoves, and—depending on which farmhouse you choose—even a traditional sunken hearth. Treat yourself to ample amenities, with modern bathrooms, heating, and plush sofas and beds to ensure a cozy and pleasant stay.

Simply step outside the door and discover the warmth of a thriving farming village in this quaint rural area of Yamaura. See how locals live in perfect harmony with nature, foraging for wild vegetables in spring, growing rice with crisp water from mountain streams in summer, and pickling foods and freezing tofu to sustain them through the long winter.

Shape your stay with tailored plans that allow you to mingle with village residents. Join your neighbors in making miso and cooking local delicacies, take a walking tour, join a crafts workshop, or even help a farmer tend the fields. Otherwise, simply relax and enjoy the peaceful privacy of your own idyllic home. Sip sake on the porch as the day fades away, surrounded by the gentle hum of cicadas and beneath an evening sky of twinkling stars.

Dine out at a nearby restaurant, or have delectable dishes delivered to your door. The fully equipped kitchens will delight culinary creatives, with a selection of fresh locally sourced ingredients available upon request.

Yamaura Stay was designed by Alex Kerr, a best-selling writer with ample experience restoring old Japanese houses and creating unique rural retreats.

Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Chuo Line to Shinjuku Station (about 14 minutes), then transfer to the Azusa Limited Express train to JR Chino Station (about two hours). Complimentary shuttle service is available to and from Chino Station.
