Green Tea Pairing and Calligraphy Experience
Enjoy green tea paired with a seasonal meal plus the opportunity to do calligraphy with a special form of ink
Set snugly beneath Mount Fuji and the Pacific Ocean, Shizuoka is Japan’s top tea-producing region. Kakuyabessho, a restaurant within easy walking distance of Shizuoka Station, has devised something called the “Tea Pairing and Matcha Calligraphy® Experience”. It’s a great way for you to gain insights into the worlds of Japanese tea, cuisine, and calligraphy in one three-hour package. For effortless enjoyment, the experience includes English interpretation.
The experience starts with a calligraphy lesson, during which a calligrapher teaches you how to write your name with a brush in beautiful flowing Japanese characters. But this calligraphy lesson has a unique Shizuoka twist: Instead of using ordinary black ink, you use a green solution made from powdered tea, grown locally and sustainably. As it dries, the color of the ink changes from bright green to a more subdued brown, mirroring the seasonal changes of the natural world. Once your cultural curiosity has been satisfied, it’s time to switch gears and move from calligraphy to cuisine. In the second part of the experience, a renowned international tea master introduces you to a wide selection of green teas carefully paired with a multi-course meal made from seasonal ingredients.
Access: From Tokyo Station take the Shinkansen bullet train to Shizuoka Station (about 1 hour). The restaurant is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Shizuoka Station and about 8 minutes on foot from Shin-Shizuoka Station.
If you are going from Haneda Airport, take the train to Shinagawa Station (about 20 minutes) there catch the Shinkansen bullet train to Shizuoka (about 50 minutes), then walk to the restaurant (about 15 minutes).
