Reclaim Your Serenity with a Forest Temple Stay

Meditate in a bamboo grove, telework from the main hall, or simply relax and recharge with the temple as your private retreat

Shoureki-ji temple has served as a place of Buddhist worship for over a thousand years. Today, it also welcomes travelers seeking a retreat for the soul. Only one party per night is accommodated, so you’ll have the entire temple to enjoy as you wish. Telework from the main hall, relax in the traditional Japanese-style guest room with views of the Yura River and the mountains beyond, or explore the mossy eighteenth-century garden, where camellias bloom in springtime and bush clover in the fall.

Temple Hotel Shoureki-ji has all the amenities of a modern hotel. Loungewear, toiletries, towels, and tea and coffee are all provided. The temple’s chief priest takes on the role of concierge, seeing to guests’ needs and leading optional activities such as morning meditation in a bamboo grove—dozens of different programs are available. At dinnertime, he also serves as private chef, preparing and serving a gourmet meal of rare game fowl.

Explore the teachings of Buddhism through personal experience in a serene, private environment, and return to the everyday world refreshed and energized.

Access: Take the local train from Shin-Osaka Station to Ayabe Station (about 95 minutes).
