Stand Atop Kyushu’s Colossal, Active Mt. Aso
Visit the Aso UNESCO Global Geopark for breathtaking nature tours
Mighty Mt. Aso is home to an official UNESCO Global Geopark. Book a tour to visit its majestic peak and see the Aso Caldera, a massive and still very active volcano. Aso's Geoguides provide detailed tours of Mt. Aso's majesty, with particular insight into the relationship of geology and the local fauna to the volcano.
Choose from a short two-hour excursion or a full six-hour tour and spend a day in the crisp mountain air, taking in one vista after another. Travel from cooling waterfalls to the massive Uchinomaki hot spring. Tours are customizable, but vary in length and content. Enjoy this up-close look at nature's raw beauty—it’s no wonder that the entire region has been designated as Aso Kuju National Park.
Visitors should be forewarned that the crater and some hiking trails may be closed off during times of heightened volcanic activity.
Access: From Tokyo Haneda Airport, fly to Aso Kumamoto Airport (about one hour 55 minutes), then take the Kumamoto Airport Limousine Bus to the Aso Eki-mae stop (about 50 minutes). From Hakata Station, take the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kumamoto Station (about 30 minutes), then transfer to the Hohi Line local train to Aso Station (about one hour 20 minutes).
