Breathtaking views from Amaharashi Beach at this coastal tourist destination
Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture
Amaharashi Beach, located in the north of Takaoka City, is a beautiful spot that attracts photographers. The view of the ocean and 3,000-meter high mountains are breathtaking all year round. There are said to be only two other places in the world where one can see such high mountains from the water.
On winter mornings, you might also observe “Kearashi,” a natural phenomenon where the cold air from the land is pulled into the ocean, causing the water surface to let off steam.
There is a legend that a famous Japanese military commander, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, took shelter from the rain on the Amaharashi Beach, giving the location its name. At the roadside station Amaharashi, you can not only take pictures of the spectacular view from the observation deck, but also buy souvenirs and use the cafe.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Shin-Takaoka Station (about 3 hours), then take the train from Shin-Takaoka Station to Takaoka Station (about 5 minutes). Next, ride the bus from Kaetsuno bus stop No. 2 to Iwasaki (about 50 minutes).
