The Autumn Beauty of Ritsurin Garden

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > The Autumn Beauty of Ritsurin Garden

Stroll among the golden colors of the surrounding foliage of Ritsurin Garden

Kagawa Prefecture

Ritsurin Garden, a strolling-style daimyo (feudal lord) garden that took over 100 years to be created, was finally completed in 1745. The beauty of the garden is characterized by the Japanese phrase ippo ikkei (“every step, a different scene”), which means you can enjoy a change of scenery with each step you take as you walk through the garden.

At Ritsurin Garden, you can enjoy the beauty of the seasons throughout the year. Every fall, when the garden is filled with autumnal colors, Ritsurin Garden holds a magical illumination event for approximately ten days, and it is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike.

There are various ways to enjoy the event, such as strolling along the garden paths lined with Japanese maple trees, or riding on a traditional Japanese boat.

On days when there is little or no wind, the surface of the water in the pond becomes almost like a mirror, reflecting the golden colors of the surrounding foliage.

The Japanese boat that elegantly carves its way through the golden water of the pond is especially popular. When you watch this enchanting scene while relaxing in Kikugetsu-tei Teahouse, time will pass by before you know it.
