Muroran City
Located on the northside of the entrance to Uchiura Bay in the industrial city of Muroran, Cape Chikyu is one of Hokkaido’s most beautiful landscapes.
The name ‘Chikyu’ means ‘cliffs’ in the language of the Ainu – the indigenous people of Hokkaido – and its 100-meter-high cliffs stretch for 14 kilometers around the coast to the south of Muroran.
At the tip of the cape overlooking the ocean, is a white lighthouse and an observation deck, from which, on clear days, the panoramic views extend as far as the eye can see, even appearing to curve on the distant horizon. Ring the nearby Bell of Happiness and hear the sound resonate out across the sea.
Popular with locals – particularly on New Year’s Day, when they flock to celebrate the first sunrise of the year – Cape Chikyu has been ranked first among Hokkaido’s ‘100 Best Nature’ spots. Its scenic beauty is enhanced by its status as an important nesting site for rare peregrine falcons, which you can see hunting for migratory birds above the cliffs.
By plane, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Haneda Airport to New Chitose Airport. Cape Chikyu is about 1 hour and 30 minutes from New Chitose Airport by car.
