Explore the pristine nature around Hokkaido’s highest mountain by trekking around the swamps of the Kogen hot springs area

Taisetsu Kamuimintara DMO

Come experience the wild, untouched nature of Hokkaido at Daisetsuzan National Park, the largest in Japan.

One of the best bases for exploring the park is Daisetsu Kogen Onsen, a remote lodge and hot spring. After getting picked up by your guide in Asahikawa, don your hiking boots and prepare to take on the trek around the many swamps, ponds, and forests by Daisetsu Kogen Onsen.

This circular hiking trail through the 1,200+ meter highlands is known for its many pristine ponds and having the earliest autumn colors in Japan. The course is seven kilometers long and takes approximately four hours to complete. The tour runs from late June to early October.

This pristine wilderness is home to many creatures, including brown bears, so be sure to join a safety talk at the Brown Bear Information Center before starting your hike, and follow the guide’s instructions to stay safe and not disturb the wildlife.

If you prefer something a bit less strenuous, join a cycling tour in Higashikawa, a town with delicious spring water that is home to the Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Memorial Museum, where you can learn about the history and culture of Hokkaido's indigenous people.

How to get there

From Sapporo Station, take the limited express train to Asahikawa Station (about 1 hour 25 minutes). Alternatively, the guide can meet you at Asahikawa Airport, a 1-hour 35-minute flight from Haneda Airport.

Asahidake Ropeway, Higashikawa-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido.
