A new route in Kyushu for exploring sacred volcanoes and the lives of local people
Kyushu Tourism Organization
Kyushu is home to some of Japan's most active volcanoes, and the island’s residents live in harmony with the blessings they provide. Feel the Earth's heartbeat at volcanic craters and explore the breathtaking canyons and majestic mountains sculpted by past eruptions.
The Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture is home to many stone statues and rock houses dug into the tuffaceous conglomerate bedrock created by volcanic eruptions. Trekking around these heritage sites, visitors will learn deeply about the beliefs and culture of the people of that time.
In Oita Prefecture’s city of Beppu, explore the daily lives of people benefiting from the hot springs with a local guide. Enjoy a healthy lunch with a “hell-steamed” cooking experience, a popular method of sustainable cooking using the hot springs.
In Miyazaki Prefecture, Takachiho Evening Kagura is a sacred performance where gods are welcomed and prayers for abundant harvests and peace are offered. Experience a moment of communion with the divine.
Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture is one of Japan’s largest active volcanoes. Experience the heartbeat of the Earth up close on an e-bike, or climb trails like the Aso Pasture Path that are usually off-limits and reach the volcano’s summit, where volcanic smoke rises. The tour package includes a Grassland Conservation Fee to maintain and manage the area’s thriving pastureland. By participating in the tour, you can contribute to protecting the beautiful nature of Aso.
