Designated one of Japan’s three clearest rivers, the Nagara River flows through a richly forested area of mountains, remote villages, and well-preserved Edo-period towns in central Japan. Joining a guided E-bike tour along this tranquil river is surely the best way to explore the area and discover its many hidden treasures.

Your 22km cycling journey begins in Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture, a charming castle town located at the confluence of three rivers and irrigated by a centuries-old canal system. From here you pedal effortlessly along quiet country roads, assisted by an electric motor, while learning of the landscape’s cultural and spiritual significance from your local guide. Visit ancient shrines and shimmering waterfalls, glide past crystal-clear rivers and peaceful hamlets, and hear tales of sacred eels, holy mountains, and an itinerant monk said to have carved 120,000 Buddhist statues in his lifetime.

Your moderate exertions will be rewarded with a restorative soak in a hot spring that also doubles as a train station. Clean and refreshed, you then step aboard a small country train and gaze out at the Nagara River, as you are transported back to Gujo Hachiman.
