Fall foliage in Setonaikai National Park Shodoshima, Kankakei Gorge

Kagawa Prefecture

This stunning landscape of peculiarly shaped rocks and cliffs started forming when layers of andesite and blocks of volcanic breccia—produced by volcanic activity approximately 1,300 years ago—were gradually shaped by movements of the Earth’s crust and the erosion by wind and rain. Kankakei Gorge has been named one of Japan’s top three most beautiful gorges and is known to be one of the outstanding beauties and autumn colors of Shodoshima. The view from the ropeway, which travels through the fall foliage valley, is breathtaking and is well worth the visit.

How to get there

From Shin Osaka Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Okayama Station. From there, take the train to Takamatsu Station and walk to Takamatsu Port (about 10 minutes).

From Takamatsu Port, take a ferry headed to Shodoshima (Ikeda Port). From Ikeda Port, take the Shodoshima Olive Bus in the direction of Kankakei and get off at the final stop, then take the ropeway.
