Take in breathtaking mountain and ocean views while enjoying winter sports in southern Niigata

Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture

Itoigawa, located in the southwestern corner of Niigata, offers two splendid ski resorts: Charmant Hiuchi Snow Resort and Itoigawa Seaside Valley Ski Area. Both are blessed with slopes to suit all levels of skier and snowboarder, from beginner to expert. Furthermore, there are views of the magnificent North Alps in one direction and of the Sea of Japan in the other.

The operators of Charmant Hiuchi Snow Resort believe that snow is best when it's left untouched, so over 60% of the slopes here are unpacked, natural powder snow. The snow is also piled so deep here that the resort remains open until May. From the slopes here, you can enjoy beautiful views of Mt. Hiuchi and Mt. Niigata Yakeyama.

The Itoigawa Seaside Valley Ski Area is a more family-friendly ski resort, where the gentle slopes and forest courses are popular with beginner and intermediate skiers. After a day on the slopes here, you can relax and unwind in the baths of the Shio-no-michi onsen. The hot spring waters are said to be good for the skin as well as effective against pain.

While at Itoigawa, also be sure to sample the region’s tasty seafood. The monkfish dishes are highly recommended here during winter.
