This delicious sweet green soybean paste is a unique and much-loved treat in the Tohoku area
Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture
Made of mashed boiled green soybeans mixed with sugar, zunda is one of the most widely loved traditional sweets in the Tohoku area. It’s said that the founder of Sendai, Date Masamune himself, was a fan!
Green soybeans have a chilly, delicate appearance with their beautiful light green color and are chock-full of nutrients. Zunda is generally ground up to make it easier to eat and served cold, and is an easily digestible treat during the hot summers. The sweet soybean paste is typically served in the form of zunda mochi (a type of rice cake), but many other zunda-filled sweets can be found in Sendai! Pictured are zunda mochi and zunda taiyaki, a fish-shaped pancake filled with zunda paste!
