A powder snow paradise
Higashikawa Town, Hokkaido Prefecture
At 2,291 meters above sea level, Asahidake is the highest mountain in Hokkaido. Scale it in comfort using the Asahidake Ropeway for a scenic ride between the Asahidake hot spring resort and the 6th station of the mountain.
The first snow of the season falls on Asahidake from late September and remains until mid-June. It is worth your while to brave the cold in January and February to view the frozen phenomena known as “diamond dust” and sun pillars (vertical shafts of light from the sun), which are viewable only during these winter months.
Asahidake is known as the holy land of powder snow, a favorite destination of skiers and snowboarders who enjoy pristine, perfect conditions from late December all the way into May.
It is important to note that Asahidake isn't a ski resort, so we strongly recommend you take a tour with an experienced guide to enjoy it safely. For backcountry enthusiasts, the feeling of floating on the powdered snow of Asahidake is an experience you’ll never forget.
Later, rejuvenate your body and mind as you soak in the hot springs of Asahidake Onsen, with the breath-taking mountains of Asahidake providing a picture-perfect backdrop.
