Toyama Prefecture
A beautiful city in Toyama Prefecture, Tonami boasts the largest number of tulip bulbs cultivated in Japan. The cultivation of tulips in Tonami started more than 100 years ago and even today the tulip is the symbol flower of both Tonami City and Toyama Prefecture.
To celebrate such a special flower, every year, from late April to early May, Tonami City hosts the Tonami Tulip Fair, one of the largest tulip festivals in Japan. The event has a history of more than 50 years and is held at the main venue of Tonami Tulip Park, a place of relaxation where visitors can enjoy flowers of all four seasons. With 3 million tulips of 300 varieties blooming in a variety of colors, Tonami Tulip Fair attracts many visitors from all over the country and abroad.
The garden is full of attractions. The ground view of the large flower beds from the Tulip Tower and Tulip Sky Walk, in particular, is a must-see. Other sights worth seeing include the Flower Walls, 4m high and 30m long, which are based on the image of the Snow Walls of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Water Flowerbed, a Tonami original, the heart-shaped ILOVE Flowerbed, the Water Wheel Garden, the Colored Garden, the Dutch-style Flowerbed, the Komorebi Garden, and the Round Flowerbed.
Take a stroll among the artistically arranged flowerbeds and enjoy the perfect symphony of a multitude of vibrant colors and scents. Tonami Tulip Fair is the perfect place for a spring day out! At the venue you will also find indoor displays, tulip-themed souvenirs, live music, and an array of exciting events, including brass band performances.
From Shin-Takaoka Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, take the JR Johana Line to Tonami Station (20 minutes), then walk 15 minutes or take the free shuttle bus or a taxi (5 minutes) to Tonami Tulip Park.
