The array of seasonal flowers of Yuushien Garden on Daikonjima in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, ensure that you'll be greeted with colorful blooms and greenery whatever time of year you visit. It is best known for its peonies, which bloom year round in the Peony House and en masse outside in spring. Summer brings camellias, hydrangeas and water lilies, autumn glows with vibrant leaves, and winter comes alive with more peonies and irises.

Stay until the evening, and the garden further transforms with colorful seasonal illuminations and artistic projection mapping.

In autumn, drifting mists add to a magical view of red and yellow foliage reflecting in Yuushien’s still pond. As night falls, the leaves are lit up to mysteriously glow in the twilight. Return for the Christmas season, and the entire garden is decorated with more than 1.3 million lights for an extra festive view.

Yuushien Garden is a “chisen-kaiyū shiki-teien,” a Japanese “stroll garden” of meandering paths that center around a large pond. Often called “the miniature garden,” sections of its landscape are modeled after picturesque areas of eastern Shimane, including Mt. Daisen, Oni No Shitaburui Gorge and Hiikawa River, Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi.

How to get there

From Haneda Airport, take a plane to Yonago Airport (about 1 hour and 15 minutes), then drive for about 15 minutes to get to Yuushien Garden.
