Hiroshima has some amazing local food; okonomiyaki, oysters, hot and cold spicy noodles, the bounty of the Seto Inland Sea. And it can all be washed down with some of the best sake in the land. Sometimes, however, you need a break and you want to treat yourself to some delicious, healthy fare, made with love and served with a smile. Enter Sheba Cafe.
Located on a corner on the western edge of Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, Sheba Cafe is the perfect place to grab a late breakfast, lunch or a snack before or after you visit the park.
Sheba Cafe has a shabby chic exterior that belies a stylish interior with some cool glass-topped tables which contain little gardens decorated with dried flowers. You can also sit at the counter which surrounds the small open kitchen. Sitting here and observing how much care and attention the staff put into the presentation of their lunch plates, you can fully appreciate why they only make a limited number every day.
If you have your heart set on one of these culinary works of art, try to get there early as they are very popular.
As well as lunch plates, Sheba Cafe serves tasty and filling smoothies and smoothie bowls which contain their signature granola. Quirky and full of surprises, Sheba Cafe’s desserts and gelato ice creams are also worth saving space for, and they sell some of the most delicious homemade croissants in the city.
Spending time learning about Hiroshima’s history in the Peace Memorial Park can be emotionally draining, but it’s almost impossible to leave Sheba Cafe feeling good about the world and with a smile on your face.
