Teshima

〜Boasting of Beautiful Nature on Top of Contemporary Art〜

Teshima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, where you can admire the glittering sea as you pass through beautiful terraced rice fields, or vast orange and olive farms. There are also both domestic and foreign contemporary art pieces that can be found scattered among these fields.

◆Beautiful nature, prolific island taste, stunning art pieces

Located in the middle of Kanagawa Prefecture and Okayama Prefecture in the calm Seto Inland Sea, Teshima is an island with an area of 14.5km 2 and a population of about 800 people. It is known as a contemporary art island along with Naoshima, where you can also enjoy the beauty of nature to the fullest, such as the terraced rice fields spreading across the gentle slopes of the island that are symbolic of Japan’s rural landscape scenery, the glittering blue Seto Inland Sea, and the white sandy beach.

You can visit the art pieces that are scattered around the island on a bicycle that can be rented easily (it is recommended that you get an electric bicycle) while experiencing the abundant nature on the island. Enjoy the island taste when you get hungry with dishes that make use of plenty of local fish and vegetables.

● Recommended spots in Teshima

Visit Teshima Art Museum that matches the scenery on the island perfectly. The museum can be said to be a piece of work in itself, and is a space where visitors can feel the breath of nature. Feel this space with your mind and body as you calm your mind, sharpen your senses, and interact with nature.

Another place to visit would be Teshima Yokoo House, which artist Tadanori Yokoo has created by renovating an old house to express his view of life and death, and provides a philosophical space for visitors to think about life and death themselves. You can also listen to the heartbeats of people from all around the world and even record your own heartbeat when you visit “Les Archives du Coeur” that French artist, Christian Boltanski, has been gathering to prove the existence of all these people in the world.
