Every now and then, I indulge in an ‘extreme’ sport called sand skiing. There is a sand ski ground in Toji, about 20 minutes away from Izukyu-Shimoda station. I like coming here because entrance is free.
You can rent sleds to ski, but I prefer to bring my own sled or big cardboard. It’s quite tiring to climb up the sand hill, which is a 35° slope, but the thrilling ride down towards the sea in front is worth it!
The surrounding scenery of the sea and mountains are very beautiful. However, please don’t admire it when sliding as it can be dangerous. If you don't control the speed of your sled with your feet properly, you might end up on the stone shore between the sand hill and the sea.
Many local children play here, but please do not imitate them, as they are the experts of this sport.
