The Birthplace of Yosakoi

Kochi Prefecture is known as the origin of the Yosakoi Festival, a traditional festival celebrated throughout Japan.

The History of Yosakoi

Yosakoi started in the 1950s as a way to reinvigorate citizens still recovering from the post-war economic depression. Yosakoi parades consist of dance teams in traditional Yosakoi outfits led by a Jikatasha, a music truck decorated with fancy adornments.

Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center

The festival is held every August, but you can visit the Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center at any time of the year. Get acquainted with the Yosakoi culture through numerous exhibits, naruko clapper-making workshops and the Yosakoi dance classes.
