Aomori’s sixteen towering peaks of Hakkoda—ten in the northern range and six in the southern—are considered among Japan’s 100 most famous. The wetlands and lakes scattered among the mountains teem with alpine flowers in summer, and the heavy snowfall in winter that blankets the Maries’ firs attracts backcountry skiers and snowboarders. Even beginners can conquer Mt. Otake (1,311 m) via ropeway, before descending through marshlands for a soak in the famous hot springs of Sukayu Onsen below. Further immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area with a visit to the calm waters of Lake Towada, and a stroll to Oirase, a mountain stream that stretches for 14 kilometers.
