Yonaha-maehama Beach
Yonaha-maehama Beach

A 7-kilometer slice of paradise on Miyako Island's west coast

The relatively little-known island of Miyako in Okinawa is home to Yonaha Maehama Beach, a pristine 7-kilometer stretch of shoreline ranked among the best sandy beaches in Japan.

Don't Miss

  • World-class snorkeling and scuba diving in turquoise waters
  • Unrivalled sunsets

How to Get There

Yonaha Maehama beach on Miyako Island is accessible by car or taxi. The only way to access Miyako Island from mainland Japan is by plane.

Quick Facts

Yonaha-maehama Beach is most popular from the spring through the autumn and is the main attraction on Miyako Island

The beach hosts the swimming section of an annual "Strongman" triathlon at the end of April

Refresh and unwind

This picture-postcard beach has sun parasols and deck chairs available to idle the day away and plan your ongoing journeys in Okinawa . There are also jet skis and banana boats to rent, and showers and toilet facilities nearby.

Getting around the island

Car or taxi is the best way to explore Miyako's other sights such as the botanical garden and neighboring three islands which are connected by bridge; public transportation here runs infrequently.

If you take a taxi anywhere, make sure to make a note of the company's number to arrange the return journey. If you can't speak Japanese, ask for help at a nearby shop or restaurant.

Several outlets in the island's town center also offer scooter and bicycle rental. Note that you will need a valid international driving license to hire a scooter in Miyako and anywhere else in Japan.
