Discover the World of “Japan Blue” Indigo Dyeing

Visit a traditional artist's atelier in the Mt. Fuji area and create a one-of-a-kind piece

Cherished within Japan for centuries, the traditional art of indigo dyeing has become immensely popular overseas as well. Characterized by a stunning deep blue hue, the dye is also called “Japan Blue.” Although the traditional dye made from indigo leaves has become increasingly rare due to modern production methods, a number of artisans continue to protect this age-old art. Get closer to the living tradition of Japan Blue at a private indigo dyeing atelier tucked in the mountains of Tsuru City in Yamanashi Prefecture.

Discover the painstaking process and techniques involved in this precious craft as the resident artist recounts amazing stories based on her long-standing research of ancient Japanese materials and traditional methods. Then, with expert guidance, try your hand at dyeing a t-shirt or scarf and take home your own authentic piece of Japan Blue.
