Unnan City

Row of Kawazu cherry trees

Located south of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture, Unnan City is a vast area that comprises the towns of Daito, Kamo, Kisuki, Mitoya, Yoshida, and Kakeya. Blessed with abundant nature and a rich cultural heritage, the city offers a number of interesting tourist spots and beautiful natural attractions all year round. One of the charms of this area is that you can enjoy cherry blossoms of various varieties over a long period, from late February to late April.

Lined with more than 800 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, some of which are over 80 years old, the banks of the Hii River in Kisuki Town have been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. The place is particularly famous for the stunning cherry blossom tunnel that stretches for about 2km and is bustling with tourists every year.

In Daito Town you will find Kawazu cherry trees planted along the Aka River for about 1 km. Kawazu cherry blossoms reach their peak early in mid-March and turn a deep pink color. At Mitoya Riverside Park in Mitoya Town, you can enjoy late-blooming green cherry blossoms called Gyoiko. A quite rare variety in Japan, they bloom about two weeks later than normal Somei Yoshino.

There are plenty of other gorgeous cherry blossom viewing spots scattered throughout Unnan City. Seasonal events, such as festivals held in conjunction with the cherry blossoms blooming, add fun to this spectacle of nature. Also, don’t miss the beautiful illuminations, which allow you to enjoy the different appearance of the cherry blossoms during the day and at night.
