Kurobe Unazuki-onsen Tourist Board
The deepest V-shaped gorge in Japan, the Kurobe Gorge, can be traversed by riding the Kurobe Gorge Railways in Toyama Prefecture, which is also home to Kurobe Dam, one of the country's biggest dams.
The railroad was initially used as an industrial railroad to construct hydroelectric power plants. Even though they are still used for power plant maintenance today, tourists can now ride along and take in the stunning scenery hidden away in nature. The trolley will take you through the incredible natural landscapes of the gorge and even to some hot springs that are only accessible by the trolley.
You can also find a thrilling trail aimed for experienced climbers that runs alongside the trolley called the Horizontal Trail, a narrow path less than one meter wide, with the Kurobe River flowing 200 meters below. You can find a hut with a hot spring in the middle of the trail, which is said to be the most dangerous hot spring in Japan and is longed for by many climbers.
From Toyama Airport, take a bus to JR Toyama Station (30 minutes). From there, take the train to JR Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station. Walk for 5 minutes to Shin-Kurobe Station, and take the train to Unazuki Onsen Station. The Kurobe Gorge Railway (Unazuki Station) is a 3 minute walk from the Unazuki Onsen Station.
