A scenic moutain spot and the place where the gods descended

Matsumoto City

Kamikochi, located on the west side of Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture, is a scenic mountain spot that was introduced to the world by British missionary Walter Weston about 130 years ago.

Out in the brisk air, you have a view of 3,000-meter-class mountains and gorgeous lakes and marshes. There are a number of walking trails, and one of the charms of this place is the flat paths can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is also possible to be accompanied by a nature guide for an even deeper appreciation.

The highlights which sit high above sea level at 1,500 meters are the magnificent alpine views, an active volcano, a prehistoric forest, and the azure waters of the Azusa River flowing naturally from the center of the mountains.

During the summer months and into early autumn, the walking trails along the Azusa river offer spectacular scenery and fresh air.
With restricted access for private cars, it continues to maintain its natural integrity in these modern times.
Make use of a taxi or bus that has been granted access to the area when visiting.

How to get there

Take the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line train from Matsumoto Station to Shin-Shimashima (30 min), followed by a bus ride to Kamikochi (60 min). There is also one direct bus a day to Kamikochi from Matsumoto Bus Terminal (90 min).
