The seaside town of Shiraoi is home to Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park, a national center dedicated to the history and culture of Hokkaido’s indigenous Ainu people.
Set on the shores of Lake Poroto amidst abundant natural beauty, Upopoy offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the Ainu worldview, which has a reverence for nature. The National Ainu Museum, located within Upopoy, is Japan's northernmost national museum and the first one dedicated to Ainu culture. What’s more, the museum’s exhibitions are presented from an Ainu perspective.
