Known for their fluffy and adorable appearance, Akita Dogs are a breed that originated in in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, and were previously called Odate Dogs. Akita Dogs are well-loved throughout the world, especially since their appearance in the movie Hachi. Since 1937, the Akita Dog Preservation Society has been devoting their efforts to preserving the bloodline of the local Akita Dogs, with branches not only in Japan, but throughout the world. Every year on the 3rd of May, the Akita Dog Preservation Society Exhibition, an event that gathers Akita Dogs from all over the world, is held to determine the best Akita Dog in Japan. The dogs are judged based on a list of 70 strict criteria, including their traits and characteristics. You can even interact with dogs and their owners at the event.

How to get there

 

From Haneda Airport, catch a flight to Odate-Noshiro Airport (about 1 hour 10 minutes). From Odate-Noshiro Airport, take the limousine bus to Odate City.
