Hike through abandoned military buildings covered in lush greenery

Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture

Tomogashima is a group of tropical islands in the Kitan Strait consisting of Jinoshima, Kamishima, Okinoshima, and Torajima.

Okinoshima, which takes about 20 minutes by boat from Kada Port, has a hiking trail around historic military bases covered in lush greenery. First-time visitors are recommended to visit the No. 3 Fort Ruins and Takanosu Observatory. This hike is only about an hour or so and not too tiring, while still offering an ocean view from the highest place in Tomogashima.

How to get there

From Kansai International Airport, take the JR Kansai Airport Line/Hanwa Line to Nankai Wakayamashi Station (about 45 minutes). From Nankai Wakayamashi Station, take the Kada Line to Kada Station (about 25 minutes). Kada Port is about a 20-minute walk from Kada Station. Tomogashima is about 20 minutes from Kada Port via the Tomogashima Ferry.
