For a sense of old-world Japan and a taste of the incredible samurai culture, people often make the journey to Kyoto. But there's a another great option not many people know about!
The town of Kaku-no-Date in Akita Prefecture is not only known as 'Michinoku's Little Kyoto' thanks to its strong Edo Period (1600-1868) atmosphere in its compact 2km area, it's also home to some of the most dramatic cherry blossoms in the world. Over 400 weeping cherry trees - 162 of which are designated as national natural monuments - awash the narrow streets of Kaku-no-Date with their magnificent trailing blooms in spring.
You can arrive at Kaku-no-Date from Tokyo on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen - a three-hour bullet-speed ride through the stunning Tohoku countryside - and enjoy the impressive samurai precincts of this unique historical town.
